“Mont Blanc is my precious stone, my wild granite with its powerful russet tones and its delicately snow-topped ridges, its blue glaciers and turbulent skies, an island at altitude, one of the most spectacular, where natural elements play an important role. A game that is at times violent, often subtle, caught between light and shade, calm and storm, horizontal and vertical.” JEAN-FRANÇOIS HAGENMULLER

About the Artist

JEAN-FRANÇOIS HAGENMULLER
Jean-François Hagenmuller was born in 1958 in Alsace. He has been a mountain guide and teacher at the École Nationale de Ski et d'Alpinisme in Chamonix since 1985. Fascinated by Mont-Blanc and the spectacle provided by nature, he turned to his second passion, photography, in order to transpose his impressions of the beauty and serenity of the landscape at high altitude into images. His photographs reflect his intimate and everyday relationship with the mountain, which he knows from its tiniest variations to its most beautiful views. He became a professional photographer in 1995 and contributes regularly to a number of specialist magazines. He also produces books, one of which, Lumières d'altitudes published by Éditions Glénat in 2004, won the World Mountain Image Book Award. Jean-François Hagenmuller is today considered one of the greatest contemporary photographers of the Alpine region.
