Gwenn Dubourthoumieu discovered photography while working in Africa with humanitarian NGOs. This formative experience led her, in 2010, to turn to photography professionally and move to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where she began a long-term documentary project focused on social issues and human rights. At the same time, she worked as a press photographer for Agence France-Presse. Based in Paris since 2012, she has developed an independent practice centered on social and environmental issues, inequality, and power dynamics, both in France and internationally. Her work in the DRC remains one of its core strands, shaped by more than fifteen years in the field and widely published in the French and international press. One of her series on the social impacts of copper and cobalt mining in southeastern DRC was acquired in 2013 by the permanent collection of the Library of Congress in the United States. In recent years, she has continued her research deep within the Congolese rainforest alongside travel writer Guillaume Jan, through a series of expeditions in what is now considered one of the world’s most critical terrestrial carbon sinks. In 2024, she published Entre-soi, le séparatisme des riches, a photographic investigation co-authored with sociologist Monique Pinçon-Charlot. In March 2025, she joined the Argos collective, continuing a committed practice at the intersection of reportage, investigative work, and visual storytelling.
